Overview

Math class is a competition math-based environment in which we take different questions that may be Massachusetts Math League (MAML) or American Invitational Mathematics Exam (AIME) spinoffs, work on them, and present our work to each other. We also work from Exeter math workbooks and make many presentations, which helps us reflect on how to organize our work and share it effectively. We also do a lot of work with Math Modeling, which is the art of using Math to solve real world problems.

Projects

An example would be the High School Mathematical Contest in Modeling (HiMCM) Math competition. In this math competition at MAMS, small teams would have to work for 2 to 3 days straight to compile a 25-page paper detailing our solution to either Question A or B. Question A involved calculating the best summer job for a typical High Schooler while Question B had to do with analysis of crime rates in different parts of a city. My group (Katy Stuparu, Nick Goodchild, and I) chose A over B as we felt it required more complicated mathematical tools and concepts while Question B was more focused on the manner in which we choose to deal with large amounts of data.

At the beginning of the year, we were also tasked to work on finding out the volume of a particular tetrahedron using different methods. We eventually came together in groups and shared our work and compiled it into a small presentation for our peers. My method was Method #1 in the slideshow.
